United Church of Christ recognized for support of mentally ill

The St. Augustine Record - 3/7/2017

Earlier this month, the United Church of Christ (UCC) of St. Augustine was recognized by the National UCC Denomination for its supportive and inclusive welcome to persons challenged by mental illness.

The St. Augustine church has long been an open and affirming church to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) folks, and the recent Welcoming, Inclusive, Supportive, Engaging (WISE) Congregation for Mental Health designation extends this welcome specifically to persons challenged by mental illness.

According to the National Association for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), one in four persons will experience a mental health challenge or illness during their lifetime.

Many of these people will turn to their place of worship for help and guidance.

The churhc strives to lift the stigma of mental illness by providing education to the general public, providing information and referrals to individuals and families in need of help, by advocating for legislative action and by collaborating with other mental health organizations.
